Author Stephanie Calmenson...her dog, Harry & my art, on Skype!
Meet Stephanie and Harry! She had the winning bid on the painting hanging behind her (Black Dog + Stripes) at the Barkin Arts Fundraiser in NYC in 2006. She contacted me shortly after and expressed an interest in having me illustrate one of her future books (which I would love to do!). Stay tuned on that....
In the mean time, more about Stephanie: she has written several nonfiction dogs books and does on-line chats with schools (all age groups) as well as rescue organizations and other animal advocate groups. It warms my heart to know that my dog painting hangs in the background during these chats! Stephanie also presents at teacher and librarian conferences where she uses her books to talk about the writing process. For more information about her online chats see the "For Grown-ups" page of her web site: www.stephaniecalmenson.com
Her adorable dog, Harry, (in the Skype photo) is also the star of her book, May I Pet Your Dog? How fun is that?!
A glimpse of February...

Alice and Gracie...
My trucks casting shadows on a sunny afternoon at the studio:
A photo from our real estsate listing, our home just went on the market. It's a lovely place, if you know anyone in Chicago looking, please send them this link and have them contact me. Starting a new chapter in my life, seems the only thing we can truly count on is change...I'm doing my best to embrace it with grace.
Lovely ladies + my art...
I had a wonderful morning on Saturday at the Deer Path Art League Gallery. I had a surprise visit from some past customers and met some new ones, as well as other artists and students there taking classes in the building. In the photo: Vicki Marasco, Gallery Director (on the right) and Lydia Backer, Gallery Coordinator (on the left) who hung a beautiful show...I also met the lovely lady in orange who complemented every one of my paintings with her ensemble (not to mention she made her beautiful sweater)!
Also really enjoyed seeing the work of all the *other artists in the show: *Kristin Gereau/Wearable Fiber, Lezlie Lenz/Painting, Eugenia Meltzer/Ceramics, Cady Watson/Painting, Nio Tavlos/Painting, James Wilbat/Glass
You still have time to see the show, it runs through February 24th: Open Monday through Friday: 10am-4pm. Saturdays by appointment only.

This is the long overdue Narrative Portrait that I'm working on of my dog, Alice....
The image below was my initial sketch. There are so many silly things about her, it was hard to narrow it down, but I think these translate well:

So Lucky...
I vowed not to design any pet sympathy cards until Izzy left me...4 months after her death I started sketching designs, it was a heavy hearted exercise. I had to put them away for awhile but last week, one of my clients sadly and very unexpectedly, lost their dog so I decided I should finish one...this is it. My grief does not arise without an equal amount of gratitude for having had her in my life.
